"The Substance Abuse Foundation Inc. (SAF) is a registered charity of Barbados, established in 1996 to fight the harmful impact of illicit drugs and alcohol on the shattered lives of citizens and their families in Barbados and the wider Caribbean"

The SAF was formed by a number of socially-aware and committed men and women who recognised the urgent need to help these victims with appropriate professional rehabilitation in an enabling environment that meets internationally accepted standards of accommodation and treatment.

The SAF established Verdun House and Marina House treatment centres. Today, we are a leading internationally accredited health institution in the Caribbean, providing critical intervention and recovery services to persons suffering with the disease of addiction.

Our treatment centres (Verdun House for men & Marina House for women) are 90-day abstinence-based, 12 Step-oriented residential treatment programmes, a second stage programme where the clients live on the property and begin the process of integration back into society.

Our family programme is geared to heal the broken and strained relationships with an addict member and preparing the family as a unit to effectively support the recovery process.

The Substance Abuse Foundation Inc.  is recognised as a centre of excellence in the region.  The Foundation is accredited by EATA (European Association for the Treatment of Addictions) as of 21 August 2009.

Verdun House was opened in June, 2000 and Marina House in October 2015.

What We Do

We provide a full continuum of services dedicated to assisting individuals to recover from the physical, emotional and spiritual devastation caused by addiction. We also sees ourselves as playing a critical role in combating the stigma associated with addiction as a disease that to this day, is seriously misunderstood.

Who Are Our Clients?

The clients are from any and everywhere. Addiction is no respecter of colour, class, creed or nationality; anyone can become an addict.  Although our clients are generally from Barbados we also treat persons from the Caribbean region and beyond.

“Self-searching, and taking a personal inventory was the most profound thing that happened to me in treatment.”
